Frosty night ahead, cold Thursday and Friday

Temperatures Wednesday reached highs near 75 degrees midday, then dropped during the rest of the day. Winds from the northwest are bringing colder temperatures to our area. The high in Houghton, Michigan got up to only 54 degrees, similar to what we will have Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory for most of Northeast Michigan. It does not include Alcona and Iosco counties where nighttime temperatures will be slightly warmer. Elsewhere, low temperatures will drop to about the middle 30s. This will affect vegetation sensitive to near-freezing temperatures which should be brought inside or covered. The Frost Advisory lasts from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday.

The cold front that brought rain and thunderstorms last night is moving toward the East Coast. A high pressure system over central Canada will bring clearing skies tonight. It is also steering winds out of the north/northwest, which is helping to bring in colder temperatures.

Temperatures will remain cold Thursday and Friday with highs in the middle 50s. Afternoon highs will rise to the lower 60s Saturday, but that’s still a few degrees below normal for the end of May. Temperatures will reach the upper 60s Sunday which is close to normal. Memorial Day will become even warmer as winds shift out of the south, expect highs in the lower 70s.

Thursday: Increasing clouds, cold. Predawn low temperatures will drop to about 38 degrees. Afternoon highs will get up to around 54 degrees. Evening temperatures will head into the upper 40s.

Friday: Mainly cloudy, remains cold. Early-morning low temperatures will begin near 38 degrees. High temperatures will reach close to 54 degrees in the late-afternoon. Evening temperatures will cool to the upper 40s.

Saturday: Bright with warmer temperatures moving in. Early-morning lows will be near 38 degrees. Afternoon highs will climb to about 61 degrees. Evening temperatures will be in the 50s.
