APS receives matching grant on lunches

ALPENA, Mich.– Alpena Public Schools are taking advantage of a food grant.

The district received funding from Michigan’s “Ten Cents a Meal” grant in December. Food Service Director Nick Wiser said the program matches the cost of ten cents for every school meal. Specifically, the schools use the money to purchase fresh produce from local growers and vendors.

Wiser said the sporadic nature of in–person instruction slowed the rollout of the program slightly.

He also told WBKB he’s currently purchasing from Gordon Food Services, which sources from Michigan. Meanwhile, he’s researching the Alpena area’s vendors and hopes to arrange some deals soon.

The Ten Cents a Meal program was first piloted in 2016 and has since grown to multiple school districts in Michigan.
