AMA promotes Talking is Teaching initiative

ALPENA, Mich. — The National Talking is Teaching campaign comes to Michigan and is working with the Alpena Montmorency Alcona Educational Service District.

The goal is to target birth to age 5 for early childhood development.  The Talking is Teaching initiative increases awareness and sparks positive change in parents and communities.   It also boosts early brain development and language.

AMA Great Start Collaborative Coordinator, Angie Bruning, said there are three components to motivate behavior change. One way is through The Community Foundation, United Way, and other early childhood partners who display posters to help parents with development in their children.  Bruning said they also have workshops where they do other things in addition to talking.

Talking is Teaching participant, Kayla Maleport said she has attended classes and found the ideas caregivers and parents provided informative and helpful.  She added that as a new parent, collaborating with others and gaining new insight has been especially helpful for her.

January 19, will be the next opportunity for a Talking is Teaching workshop.
