Alpena U10 Hockey Prepares the Next Generation

ALPENA, MI – Despite the winter storm over the weekend, there was hockey to be played at Northern Lights Arena. The Battle on the Bay began on January 12 and the finale took place on January 14. The Alpena Hockey Association U10 Squirts gave proof that there’s a whole new generation rising through the ranks.

Team Cousineau became the winners of the championship game versus Team Frantz winning 3-2. The teams are quite familiar with each other as they’re both from Alpena. “They absolutely came out to play hockey,” said Head Coach Jeremy Cousineau. “That was the kind of mindset which made them win that championship game.”

Many of these players seem to have known how to skate before they could walk. That’s likely because the kids have participated in the several programs that the AHA provides for all ages and skill levels. “They do a great job from the Learn to Skate program,” said Eric Ross. “All the way to preparing these kids for high school and on to the next level.”

It might be a ways away but the U10 coaches and parents share some hopes for the next generation. Whether it be playing for the Wildcats Varsity team or at a collegiate level, the goal is continuing to have fun while playing a sport they love. “I at least want to make it through high school,” said U10 player Brantley Ross.

The AHA U10 Squirts season comes to an end on March 1.
