Alpena residents are encouraged to sign up for Smart 911 app
ALPENA, Mich. – Last week’s home invasion in Alpena has some residents asking questions about why they didn’t get an emergency alert from the city.
“People did not get an alert because they did not sign up for Smart 911.”
Smart 911 is an app based program that residents must sign up for to receive an alert on a land line or other multimedia platform.
“It can be done on a laptop computer, an iPad, so it doesn’t have to be on a smart phone,” said Alpena City Fire Department Rick Reduction Officer Andy Marceau.
Only 8 to 10,000 Alpena residents are currently registered.

Last week’s alert displayed one pro for the system, but Marceau said there are a few more.
“Once you sign up for Smart 911 Alpena county has invested in our citizens,” said Marceau. The best thing is to choose alerts and you can determine which alerts you want, weather, police activity, and we recommend people get them in a text message.”
Marceau said he hopes more people sign up as it can potentially save lives.
