Alpena Girls Basketball Defeats Oscoda 57-53 in Season Opener

OSCODA, MI – Coming off a district championship last season, the Alpena Wildcats girls basketball team is ready to defend their title and they’re off to a good start as they opened their season with a win over Oscoda on Wednesday night.

The Wildcats kicked off their season with a strong 57-53 win over the Owls. Junior guards, Avery Dubey and Reese Wisniewski, both proved why they are one of the top backcourt duos in the Big North Conference. Dubey earned 13 points, and Wisniewski followed with 12 points against Oscoda. Junior Olivia Precord had herself a night leading the Wildcats in scoring with 14 points.

On the Owls’ side, senior Elle Kellstrom had a strong night on defense clocking in two rebounds for Oscoda at the half. Sophomore Kingsley Backstrom proved to be a player to watch putting up points for the Owls.

The Owls are back at it on Friday at 7 p.m. as they visit the Bay City Central Wolves. Meanwhile, the Wildcats get a few days rest before heading to Cadillac to take on the Vikings on December 6 at 7 p.m.
