Alpena Christmas tree is lit, Santa’s back

(Photo Courtesy/Mike Beiermeister) Mayor Matt Waligora counted down the lighting of the Christmas tree on Friday night at Culligan Plaza.

Alpena — After the parade folks gathered around the downtown tree in anticipation of the lighting.

Check out the tree above, all lit up and shining bright as a beacon of the holiday season. Hundreds witnessed the lighting while braving the cold conditions. Winners of the parade float were announced before the tree was lit up. After the tree lighting, kids could chat with Santa and take pictures.

We caught up with the big man to see how his evening was going.

“I love this,” said Santa. “This is my favorite day of the year when I get to meet all of these kids, and the delivery part, it gets tough, but I love being here with the kids, done it a lot of years, and the crowd just keeps getting bigger.”

Families can visit in hist little home at Culligan Plaza on two Saturdays in December. Visit him on the 15th and 22nd from noon until 4:00 p.m. There will be hot cocoa, music, and activities for his arrival on the 15th.
