Alcona County board members vote to oppose LGBT protections ordered by Governor Whitmer

Alcona County Board Members vote on a resolution to oppose Governor Whitmer's LGBT protections.

Updated 11:40: In a former version of this story, we stated that Alcona County Board of Commissioners did not “necessarily oppose” Gov. Whitmer’s directive. We updated the story to accurately reflect their decision to support the resolution.

Alcona, Mich — Alcona County Board Members have voted unanimously to oppose Gov. Whitmer’s order, preventing discrimination against members of the LGBT community.

The directive, signed by Whitmer on January 7th, forbids discrimination of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in state employment, services, and by government contractors.

Alcona County Commissioner Adam Brege says a decision this delicate should have taken a different course in the legislative process.

” I have no bias against the LGBT community, and supported Mr. Wnuk on the basis that an issue of this sensitive nature should not be directly addressed by one governmental leader alone. For real representation of the public, it should have passed through the proper legislative process.”
