Alcona Community Schools Bond Proposal Does Not Pass

A $20 million bond proposal for Alcona Community Schools was on the ballot on Tuesday. The bond would have provided the schools new safety equipment, more up to date classroom resources and overall infrastructural improvements.

However, the proposal did not pass.

“I knew taxes were definitely something that’s really challenging right now due to the economic conditions and inflation, so definitely understood that it could go either way, and it’s contingent on a lot of people’s personal situation, which we completely understand,” said Alcona Community Schools superintendent Dan O’Connor.

The proposal would have come with a tax increase. Alcona Community Schools can use this opportunity to gather feedback from their community to see how they can proceed.

“We’re going to take some time to reflect obviously and really welcome feedback from those in the community as well so that we can determine if there might be something that we could propose down the line, but there’s been no discussion so far about any pending re–elect, putting issues back on the ballot again,” said O’Connor.

In the meantime, O’Connor and Alcona Community Schools will continue to provide the best environment for their students and educators as they can.

“We really are supporting our large batch of newer teachers, so that’s really our focus right now is making sure they have all the support so they can provide awesome instruction and help our students continue to grow and move forward,” he said.

Alcona Community Schools says it is too early to evaluate next steps with the bond proposal at this time.
