3G network disbanding in 2022

ALPENA, Mich. – Local first responders have a warning for owners of older cell phones.

Cell phones that depend on 3G connectivity will soon need replacement.

The Alpena County Dispatch said wireless carries will discontinue support of 3G devices in 2022.

3G models like flip phones, Trac phones and Jitterbugs are affected.

The Alpena Fire Department said older people normally use these phones for emergencies.

However, emergency calls are also affected.

“People could have those cell phones charged up maybe in their car, glove compartment or maybe at home on a counter when the power went out and you could always still call 911, you are not going to be able to with those 3G phones once they make the switch,” said Risk Reduction Officer Andy Marceau.

Marceau said to check older cell phone models to make sure your phone is not affected. Here are directions to help:

How do you identify if you have a 3G device?

Alpena County Central Dispatch/9-1-1 asks everyone to check their device and/or help loved ones to ensure you remain connected to each other and so you’ll always be able to reach 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.
