The Alpena County Commissioner’s meeting took an emotional turn this Tuesday when chairman Cameron Habermehl took a moment at the end to thank departing secretary Laura Ellery Somers for her hard work and dedication over the years.
After winning the August primary, Somers will take the position of Alpena Township treasurer as she is running unopposed in the November general election. Somers began working for the county 13 years ago as a temporary employee. She credits her experience working for Alpena County as the reason she is able to move to a new position in local government.
“I think we should give her a round of applause because she’s worked very hard,” said Habermehl.
The meeting attendees rose to give Somers a standing ovation, and Habermehl spoke saying that Somer’s hard work would be missed greatly.
