Youth Sailing Club returns for 2021
ALPENA, Mich. — This summer marks not only the return of an Alpena tradition, but also its 20th anniversary.
The Alpena Youth Sailing Club took a pandemic hiatus in 2020. But this month, they’ve opened registration for 2021. The club teaches more than a hundred kids the sailing fundamentals every summer.
Students take boats out on the Thunder Bay River, just behind the NOAA building and learn how to deal with the current and steer the ship.
Instructor Brynna Smith said Northeast Michigan kids aren’t the only attendees.
“We’ve had kids from New York. We’ve had somebody come from Alaska before. [We’ve had some from] Chicago [and] Maryland, so we’re pretty much open to anyone who will show up.”
Registration for the three–week camp costs about $100.
