Young entrepreneur gets surprise donation

ALPENA, Mich. — One boy at the fair received an unexpected gift.

Young Parker sold water bottles at the fair this week so he could buy a new bike. He told WBKB business was slow, but he didn’t count on the kindness of strangers.

When magician BJ Mallen saw what Parker was doing, he wanted to help. He said he liked Parker’s gumption and initiative.

“A few years ago, my son was doing something similar at an event in my home town. He raised enough money to get himself a PlayStation 4 and has now got the entrepreneurial spirit. So I thought, here’s an opportunity to inspire another.”

To that end, Mallen put out a call for donations on Facebook. He says he only expected $50  at most. Instead, his friends pulled together just over $400 for a single bottle of water— that’s twice the cost of the bike Parker wanted. Parker happily accepted and gave Mallen a hug.

Parker told WBKB he doesn’t plan on buying a more expensive model with the extra cash.

“I’m gonna save it!”

It seems the donation sparked Parker’s spirit. Even after receiving the donation, he kept on selling.
