Wildcats Dominate Petoskey to Secure 900th Win on Senior Night

ALPENA, MI – It was a bittersweet moment as Alpena recognized three senior players ahead of their Big North Conference rivalry matchup against Petoskey. Goaltender Jonathan Rensberry plus forwards Anthony Thompson and Bryce Moe celebrated with the crowd at Northern Lights Arena as they took the ice for the last time on Friday night.

Alpena came out swinging as the team picked up the 7-2 win over the Northmen to earn the 900th win in program history.

Petoskey (13-8) got going in the first period with an unassisted power play goal by Anderson Ward to go up 1-0. The Wildcats found the back of the net when Luke Miller scored to tie the game at 1-1 to end the first period.

In the second, Garrett Hamp slid a pass over to Gavin Winterstein for a goal to give Alpena a 2-1 lead. Only 30 seconds later, it was Winterstein with a pass to Lucas Weir who sent it for Brody Misiak to extend the Wildcats lead to 3-1.

Ward capitalized on a power play opportunity with a little over three minutes on the clock to trim Petoskey’s deficit to 3-2. Miller tallied his second goal of the night just a few seconds later to give Alpena the 4-2 lead after two.

Preston Schuldt extended the Wildcats lead early in the third making it 5-2. Seconds later, Senior Bryce Moe made the night even better off an assist by Hamp allowing Alpena to go up 6-2. Hamp tallied Alpena’s final score of the game with a little under four minutes to play.

Alpena’s game on Saturday has been postponed and will be made up at a later date.
