Taxpayers to be on alert for check scammers

ALPENA,Mich.— Taxpayers continue to receive their stimulus checks in efforts to lighten the financial load during the corona virus pandemic. The IRS is urging residents to be on alert for potential scammers looking to take your money.

Scammers are acting as IRS representatives trying to not only get your stimulus check, but also your personal information. According to the revenue service, scammers seek an opportunity to take advantage of people when they are most vulnerable.

Tips to keep in mind …

The official term used by the IRS is economic impact payment. Watch out for words such as “stimulus check” and “stimulus payment.”

Do not click on suspicious links or respond to text messages. You will not have to click through links to get your money.

Also, do not give out your personal information. Most funds are directly deposited or mailed out.

Lastly, watch out for bogus checks sent through mail that represent the stimulus check.
