OSCODA-AUSABLE, Mich.– Tawas Area High School honored one of their students for his heroism Friday.

Tawas Area High Senior Jace Lear and his family were driving home on US 23 the night of March 9 when they spotted an overturned car in a frozen marshy ditch.

Lear’s mother called 911 while he and his father went in to help the other family. Lear said he didn’t hesitate to run into waist–deep ice–cold water.

“I mean, I just had a gut feeling that somebody had to do something right away. So I just kinda stepped in and ran out there and did what I could.”

Lear says a woman and her child were standing outside the car. He carried each of them to his father standing on the curb. Lear then went back to help the husband still trapped in the vehicle. Lear’s father gave them blankets to warm up until help arrived.

One officer on the scene told Lear he saved the family’s lives.

Lear’s school honored him on Friday by presenting him with the quilt of valor.
