Stop the flow of PFAS

ALPENA – Mich. – Need Our Water,  a community group in Oscoda also known as NOW, called on the Air Force to stop the flow of PFAS contaminants into Oscoda area surface waters no later than 2023.

In a virtual meeting that took place Wednesday, April 22, Air Force officials indicated that the 13.5 million secured through federal appropriations in February, would not be used for immediate clean up on PFAS but for investigations and studies.

According to Township Supervisor, Aaron Weed, the Air Force argued for years that they were unable to obtain funding and now that appropriations have been given, further investigation and testing are needed.

Residents of Oscoda have been directed not to drink water from private wells, eat fish from the Au Sable River or eat venison within a 5-mile radius of Clarks Marsh.

According to U.S. Senator Gary Peters, also a member of the Senate Armed Services committee, Oscoda families have suffered too long and he plans to continue to press the Air Force to take action.
