“Spoofing” Calls Increase in Northeast Michigan

For many of Northeast Michigan residents, non–stop phone calls from unknown numbers have become the norm just like this one.

“Just tell me how much you have in your savings.”

Residents have been complaining about local numbers showing up on their caller ID’s causing some to become confused on what to do in that situation. Scammers do have the ability to change phone ID numbers tricking you into making it look like a local number.

“I got one at my house that was one of my relatives, and it was not a relative. It had a same last name, and that was about it. But you have to be careful,” MMAP Counselor, Kitty Glomski said.

Glomski and the Michigan State Police have one rule they both agree on.

“When it’s somebody invading your privacy and trying to scam you, hang up the phone, you don’t have to be nice,” she said.
