September 18 is International Coastal Cleanup Day — Beach cleanup scheduled in Alpena

ALPENA, Mich. – Saturday marks International Costal Cleanup Day and one local organization is asking the community to help cleanup Starlite Beach.

Environmental group Great Lakes Great Responsibility will host the cleanup.

As fall approaches the organization said it’s the right time to gather and take care of area waterways.

“We are going to gather here at Starlite Beach and kind of divide and conquer to clean up all the coastline in Alpena,” said GLGR Founder Meag Schwartz. “So, we’ve got Starlite Beach, Mich-e-ke-wis, and down by the harbor. We want to rally around this event to say goodbye to summer our beaches have been well trafficked and used.”

Schwartz said the organization has collected over 86 thousand pieces of trash since the organization was founded almost a year ago

“I’m really energized by the volunteers we have with great lakes great responsibility,” said Schwartz. “There are volunteers at all 5 lakes, anybody can help contribute to that mission. It’s really energizing and inspiring to see people take action on behalf of our great lakes.”

Saturday volunteers will meet at the pavillion at Starlite Beach at 10 a.m. for supplies.

The coastal cleanup will last until noon. The organization will tally the days collection afterwards.
