Sanctuary Superintendent Jumps into Freezing River for a Good Cause

Alpena- It’s not everyday you see a man in a turkey suit on a paddle board, but today was one of those days. Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Superintendent Jeff Gray found himself in this situation.

3 years ago, Friends of the Thunder Bay Sanctuary, a nonprofit, and Gray began a Giving Tuesday drive. If they raised enough money, Gray would have to dress up in the turkey suit and jump. He was originally going to go with a Santa suit but the suit was to nice and the turkey would do.
This year, 56 donors were able to raise over $10,000 and of course Gray found himself in the frigid water in the Thunder Bay River. It was the coldest year yet but Gray is happy to do for a good cause.

The money raised will help support youth and outreach programs to help educate kids and the public on different areas of the Sanctuary. This can include technology, biology, diving, robotics, etc. It’s a unique tradition for a unique place in a unique town.

More information can be found on the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s Facebook page and website.
