Overcoming alcohol addiction

ALPENA, Mich. — As Alcohol Awareness Month comes to a close we speak with one person who shares his interesting journey with this disease.

Brian Cuban has been 14 years sober and said it has been an interesting journey involving two trips to a psychiatric facility after a near suicide attempt as well as three failed marriages all collapsing all around him as he tried to hid his alcohol use.

There are many contributing factors as to why people abuse alcohol.   For Cuban, his issues stemmed from childhood.  He said he doesn’t blame anyone for his addiction and adds that his turning point was in 2007 when his then girlfriend, now wife, drove him to a psychiatric hospital after he had a black out.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, alcohol abuse produces a chemical called Acetaldehyde that damages your DNA beyond repair.  When DNA is damaged, a cell can begin growing out of control creating a cancer tumor.

Cuban has 14 years sobriety and said it is important to find your compassionate community to help you through your recovery process.
