Oscoda Township Prepares For Christmas Festivities

While Oscoda Township typically draws crowds for their sandy beaches and summer fun, on Saturday, December 2nd, downtown will be full of families enjoying winter festivities complete with horse drawn carriages, hot chocolate, and parade floats to celebrate the holiday season. “We have a huge turnout, they come five and six deep in the center of town, we got about 23 floats heading down US-23 starting at Furtaw Field, right where our Paul Bunyan is, and heading down to Mill street,” said George Samra, director of the Oscoda-AuSable Chamber of Commerce. “Then after that, there’s big thing at about 7’o clock, our local theater will be doing a free showing of “Elf,” the movie,”

While the parade starts at 5 p.m., there is plenty of holiday fun to be had leading up to it. Starting at 11 a.m. there will be free horse drawn carriage rides sponsored by local businesses until 3pm when cookie decorating for children begins at the United Methodist Church. And once its parade time, there will be floats full of lights and people handing out candy making their way down the route. “So, they’re going to be handing out candy,” said Samra, “it’s amazing these kids come almost like it’s Halloween, and they’re just waiting for the candy, the kids absolutely love it.”

The parade, hosted by the Oscoda-AuSable Chamber of Commerce, is set to be a fun time for people of all ages and is a great way to explore the area in the winter season.
