Oscoda Man Charged With Kidnapping, Assault, and More

An Oscoda man has been charged with multiple felonies for keeping an Alpena woman chained to his room.

The Michigan State Police received a call that a woman was chained in a room on January 7, prompting the Oscoda Township Police to search the home, finding the victim with a large chain locked to her ankle and multiple injuries to her entire body. The victim reported the suspect had kidnapped her and physically assaulted her with multiple weapons over the time she had been restrained by the suspect.

The suspect, Richard Michael Shears III, of Oscoda Township was charged by the Iosco County Prosecuting Attorney James A. Bacarella with one count of Kidnapping which carries a term of life in prison, one count of Torture which carries a term of life in prison, one count of Assault with intent to Murder which carries a term of life in prison, two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct 2nd degree which carries a term of 15 years in prison, one count of Interfering with an electronic communications device causing injury which carries a term of four years in prison, one count of resisting/obstructing a police officer which carries a term of two years in prison, and one count of Aggravated Domestic Violence which carries of one year.

Shears has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held without bond.
