New survey find more people shopping at local farmers markets

ALPENA, Mich. – The pandemic has led to a gardening boom.

A study done by Bonnieplants.com and Northwestern University says 20 million Americans are planting a vegetable garden for the first time or beginning to shop at their local farmers market.

The Friends of the Alpena Farmers Market told WBKB that’s great news and they are more than ready for crowds as it gets warmer this season.

“We are prepared for larger crowds,” said Alpena Farmers Market Volunteer Coordinator Linda Canfield. “Presently, we have right now about 25 vendors coming to the market on Saturdays, people are more health conscious, trying to self-distance, stay away from processed foods and therefore are either growing or shopping at local farmers markets.”

Since 1978, the Alpena Farmers Market has served the area.

Local artist, farmers and businesses owners come from all over the region with goods.

They are open every Saturday and will begin opening Wednesdays in late June from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mich- e-ke-wis Park.
