“More than Sad” Program is Raising Awareness on Teen Depression and Suicide

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is hosting a “More than Sad” Program aiming to inform parents and teachers on how to address teen depression and suicide.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for teens 10–24 years of age. Mental health has faced years of stigma and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is looking to change that. The program is helping people learn how to identify and address the issues in teen mental health and learn ways on how to prevent suicide.

Jane Trestain is a board member with American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. “It was developed so that it would help engage parents with kids regarding mental health issues,” she said. “Mental health as we know is a big issue that has been going on for a long time, and it’s one of those taboo subjects that are difficult to talk about.”

The “More than Sad” program is open to anyone who wants to learn about mental health. “It’s about an hour and half program,” said Trestain. “It’s free to the public, so any parent or daycare provider anyone that works with teenage kids is welcome to come.”

Anyone who is suffering with depression and may be having suicidal ideation is encouraged to reach out for help. There are programs that are available; some are even accessible through a phone call. “Find that person, find that adult in your life that you trust, if you don’t have that person and you can call 988,” Trestain said.

The “More than Sad” program will be in Presque Isle August 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Lake Library and Cheboygan August 23 at 6 p.m. at the Cheboygan Public Library.
