Mio’s Ty McGregor Named AP Coach of the Year

Mio, MI – After guiding the Mio Thunderbolts to a 19-2 record and a league championship, Head Coach Ty McGregor has been named the Division 4 boys basketball All-State Coach of the Year.

McGregor led his alma mater to its first league championship in ten years. The Thunderbolts earned the title of 2023 champions of the North Star League, Big Dipper division. Mio took down Whittemore-Prescott 60-41 on February 16 to bring home a championship.

Only two years ago, the school shuttered the program for a lack of players. With McGregor on board, the boys basketball team has made a full recovery. The coach has strong roots in Mio, where he clocked in 1,860 points in his playing career.

After saving a program that had no players in 2021, McGregor has his hometown team operating at full strength. The Thunderbolts produced three players named to the NSL’s All-Conference first-team, and one player earned a spot on the second-team in the Big Dipper division.

Congratulations to Mio’s Head Coach Ty McGregor for earning Coach of the Year, and finishing the season with a league championship.
