Milder temperatures this weekend; Chance of rain/snow mix Saturday

High temperatures today reached the middle to upper 30s across Northeast Michigan with cloudy skies and respite following some Halloween snowfall. Slightly milder temperatures will move in this weekend.

Yesterday’s snow in Alpena accumulated mainly at night, and 3.4 inches of snowfall were measured, which set a new record for snowfall on October 31 in Alpena. Likewise, a new snowfall record for October 31 was set in Houghton Lake. The old record snowfall amounts for Halloween go back to the 1930s.

The next round of snow showers will move in tonight. Scattered areas of mixed precipitation extend across North and South Dakota and is traveling eastward, which will keep our weather conditions unsettled through Saturday. Drier skies are expected Sunday.

Looking back at October, temperatures averaged near normal. The average of all the daily high temperatures was 56 degrees which is near normal. For low temperatures throughout the past month, the average was 37 degrees, also near normal. October was a very wet month, and snowfall registered above normal for October, thanks to last night’s weather.

Low temperatures tonight will cool to the upper 20s with a chance of snow showers. Scattered snow showers will change to a rain/snow mix tomorrow afternoon. High temperatures will reach about 40 degrees with a breeze out of the west at 10-15 mph.

For Saturday, scattered rain/snow showers will move through our area, likely not consistently all day. Remember that Daylight Saving Time ends 2 a.m. Sunday and to change the clocks backwards by 1 hour. Mostly cloudy skies are expected Sunday with highs in the lower 40s. The next disturbance, originating in Northwestern Canada, will drop southeastward and bring us shower on Monday, mostly as rain. Just ahead of Monday’s system, winds will become out of the southwest and help bring some warmer temperature, rising to the middle 40s Monday afternoon.
