Michigan AG issues urgent consumer alert on federal stimulus scams

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel today issued an urgent consumer alertĀ urging Michiganders to be on high alert for bad actorsĀ aiming to coerce them out of their personal information in a newĀ federal stimulus paymentĀ scam.

ScammersĀ are usingĀ the news thatĀ theĀ federal government willĀ send one-time payments to millions of people across the country as part of theĀ federal economic relief response to COVID-19Ā to stealĀ personal information.

The Michigan Department ofĀ Attorney GeneralĀ has alreadyĀ received reportsĀ that residentsĀ are getting emails fromĀ websites appearing to be officialĀ demanding that theyĀ provide PayPal, bank accountĀ or other financial informationĀ to receive theĀ $1,200 federalĀ stimulusĀ payment immediately.

The Attorney Generalā€™s office is reminding anyone who receives a text, email or phone call from someone claiming to be from the government with a check for them ā€” DO NOT FALL FOR IT.Ā These fakeĀ phishingĀ scamsĀ will likely ask for a personā€™s bank account information and insistĀ $1,000 or moreĀ will be depositedĀ directly into his or her bank account.

Personal information should not be given to anyone unless the provider of that information is absolutely certain of the identity of the person requesting it.
