ALPENA, Mich. — In anticipation of tomorrow’s Attorney General debate at Alpena Community College, we’re introducing you to the candidates. Today: Representative Ryan Berman.

Representative Ryan Berman studied criminal justice and psychology at Michigan State University, then worked for his law degree from Wayne State.

During his studies, Berman interned with the Michigan State Police. Berman said this is where his interest in law enforcement truly began.

“It really invigorated my passion for enforcing the law, helping people, helping them with their problems, saving people… I got exposed to a lot of different areas.”

After a career in private practice, Berman ran a successful campaign for the 39th House district in 2018. He served on the energy, insurance, and transportation committees, among others.

Although criminal justice is his primary focus, Berman said government transparency is one of his pet projects.

“I was the lead sponsor of the Legislative Open Records Act, which opens up FOIA to the legislature, the governor, and the lieutenant governor’s office.”

Berman said he’s running for office because he believes Dana Nessel is playing party politics with the office. Some of his policy goals include ending public mask mandates, cutting red tape, and dismissing the office’s lawsuits against line 5.

You can learn more about Berman’s positions when he takes the stage with his fellow candidates tomorrow night at Alpena Community College.
