Local expert weighs in on new impediment designation law
ALPENA, Mich. – WBKB recently reported on a new law that helps people with communication challenges have safer interactions with law enforcement.
The Michigan Impediment Designation ties a person’s communication challenges to the Secretary of State’s database.
This week we asked local experts to weigh in.
One psychologist and social worker says its a great use of resources to help people in the state.
“I think this new law is a tremendous step forward, because it will assist law enforcement to be better prepared to handle a situation more effectively,” said NE Michigan Community Health Authority Licensed Social Worker and Psychologist Frank Van Gothem. “This additional information will assist them to modify their approach immediately.”
The Communication Impediment Designation Program was developed to assist law enforcement in their interactions with the public.
