Library offers free lesson on home assessment

ALPENA, Mich.– The Alpena Library Special Collections Department is holding a free house assessment lesson.

The Zoom lesson runs on Tuesday at 6:00 P.M. and is a collaboration with the Michigan Historic Preservation Network.

The event will feature an expert on home assessment who will provide tips on what to look out for when buying an older property. Some things are positive, such as unique architecture or materials. Others could be sources of concern, such as potential maintenance issues or safety hazards.

Head of Special Collections Don LaBarre says that Alpena residents may find this lesson relevant given the age of many homes in the area.

“We do have a lot of historic buildings. We have a lot of homes that were built pre-1970. And so, these homes are still incredibly well-built. They always say “they never build them like they used to” and that’s a real thing.”

Those interested can visit the library’s website or Facebook page for registration information.
