June recognized as youth employment month
ALPENA, Mich. — Michigan celebrates June as youth employment month and encourages businesses to hire young people. Approximately 43,000 youth ages 16 to 19 look for employment this time of year.
In response Governor Whitmer chose June as youth employment month. Whitmer said raising awareness about young people learning valuable skills is important.
Northland Credit Union’s Assistant Vice President of Human Resources Annie Mead said they hire students to help out during summer months. Mead said the students and interns they hire leave with valuable skills.
The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity encourages businesses to hire youth. They said hiring young people, including those with disabilities, is an investment in the future and growing economy.
