June Proclaimed As Bicycle Awareness Month
June is finally here, and with it has come a new proclamation- Bicycle awareness month!
The new proclamation was put into place after local bicyclists expressed their concerns with not being welcomed by other motorists on the roads. The City of Alpena and Alpena Township have partnered together to encourage the community to embrace bicyclists, by labeling this month as Bicycle Awareness Month.
The proclamation not only brings awareness to the growing number of people who ride bikes in the area, but also the local roads and trails that attract tourists and provide economic opportunity. It’s also a reminder that bicyclists by law have the right to be on the road.
What the mayor is hoping the community will take from this month?
“Just a lot more recognition to share the roads with bicycles. Maybe the perception is that all of the roadways are just for motorized vehicles but that’s not necessarily the case,” said Mayor Matt Waligora.
Throughout the month, residents and visitors will experience the joys of bicycling through educational programs, races, community and charity events, or by simply getting out and going for a ride.
