On Thursday, February 22nd, Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center held a lecture to discuss a shipwreck discovered in Sanctuary waters.

“This Thursday, we’re bringing back our monthly sanctuary lecture series with Maritime Archaeologist Stephanie Gandulla, who will be sharing the newest discovery in sanctuary waters, the 19th century Schooner Barge Ironton which sank in 1894. And, she’s gonna be sharing the collaboration and the teamwork that went into that discovery as well as the history of the ship” said Cassandra Sadler, Resource Protection Specialist at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center.

The monthly lectures are free to the public and there is a new lecture at the center every month.

“We have different speakers come in and talk and topics range. If there’s any topics that anyone is interested in hearing about, let us know. Reach out to us and we will work on finding some experts in that field to come in and talk about whatever you’re interested in, Maritime related” said Sadler.

The Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center will have more exciting events coming to Alpena this summer.

“We are ramping up for our summer season and our summer field work, so this will be a great chance to come in and learn about the exciting science happening in the sanctuary this summer” said Sadler.

For additional opportunities to learn about Maritime, you can stop by the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm.
