Game of the Week: A Season-Opener Repeat Between Alcona and Mio

High school football is finally back. As the hours dwindle down before kick off, WBKB Sports has chosen one matchup to feature as our Game of the Week. We’re kicking off week one with a déjà vu showdown between the Mio Thunderbolts and Alcona Tigers.

Alcona’s first game of the 2023-24 season looks all too familiar. This time last year, the Tigers took on Mio in a high-scoring game on their home field. The 82-52 victory set the tone for Alcona’s season where they remained undefeated until week seven finishing with a 7-2 record. It’s safe to say that the Tigers hope that history repeats itself on Friday. Head Coach Jason Somers knows what his team is up against. “They lost a key component in their quarterback,” he said. “They have another one that’ll fill in real well.”

The Mio Thunderbolts wrapped up the 2022-23 season with a 4-5 record. Mio spent the off-season reflecting on the components of their game that need improvement. The Thunderbolts are ready to take all their hard work accomplished in the summer into their home-opener with Alcona. Head Coach Calvin Fox believes his roster has not only gotten older, but wiser. “We are getting older and more experienced,” he said. “I think that should help out quite a bit.”

The Tigers is playoff eligible for the upcoming season. Despite that, the Tigers are still just taking it one game at a time. Junior quarterback Garrett Somers is ready to get on the field. “I think Mio is a good team year in and year out,” he said. “I think it’ll be a good game.”

There’s no doubt that both Alcona and Mio are psyching themselves up for the start of the 2023-24 season. The Tigers travel to Mio on August 25 and kick off is set for 7 p.m.
