The Festival of Sail brought out a decent amount of people today. The vendors are set up and are exhibiting fun activities for all ages. The world’s largest duck arrived and is set up for people to stop by and take a look.

People are thrilled to be witnessing just how huge she is. Creator Craig Samborski designed it in 2014. It’s the second time appearing in Alpena. According to Samborski the dimensions of the duck are a little over 6 stories high and 61 feet x 64 feet wide and 74 feet long. ” The whole structure is about eight tons and there are four high intensity blowers that keep her inflated. “Duck merchandise is also available if you want to take home memorabilia.

The festival also showcases sailboats and lots of them. The food vendors are creating an appetite for many of the visitors. Live entertainment is being set up for shows this weekend. A rope creation tent and other fun entertainment for kids is available throughout the event.

Superintendent of Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuaries, Jeff Gray gave a wonderful description of this weekend’s events; ” Today’s the day of the kickoff of Alpena Festival of Sail. We have lots of events going on. The visitor center is open with all of the exhibits. The glass bottom boat is running, and we have something very special for this weekend. We have the tall ship Appledore, which is taking sailing trips out into the bay.  This is only happening this weekend and it doesn’t happen that often, when tall ships take passengers on board, so we are super excited about that. ”

The Festival of Sail runs today through Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary.
