ALPENA, MI – It’s the kind of invitation that one doesn’t say no to. Alpena native, Emma Gentry has been invited to attend the 2023 USA Hockey Women’s National Festival.
The Festival is set for August 7-13 in Lake Placid, New York. Gentry is one of the 77 players taking part in the Festival. It certainly takes a mixture of talent and skill to make the cut. Additionally, Gentry’s dedication to the game has helped her obtain the level of play worthy of an invitation. “It’s been a dream of mine for a long time,” she said. “I’m just really excited and ready to train for that.”
The call-up comes after a successful junior year at St. Cloud State. The center scored 13 goals and tallied nine assists for 22 points during the 2022-23 season. In addition, Gentry also shared the team lead with 10 goals and ranked second among her group with 25 blocked shots.
Before she heads into her senior year with the Huskies, Gentry has devoted her time preparing for her appearance at the Festival. “I pretty much lift and skate everyday,” she said. “Also, I do a lot of mental training.”
Gentry’s performance at the Festival could lead to an abundance of opportunities. The Festival helps pick the U.S. Collegiate Select Team to compete against Canada. Additionally, players could be selected for the USA senior national team.
Gentry’s aspirations don’t end in New York. As a matter of fact, it’s just the beginning for Gentry. “I’ll maybe play pro somewhere,” she said. “My end goal is the Olympics in 2026.”
