Dangers of driving US-23
ALPENA, Mich. — When driving, crash reports on some of Michigan’s popular roads may not be at the forefront of your mind, but you may be surprised to learn what studies revealed about US–23.
According to the National Transportation Highway Administration, US–23 is the fifth most dangerous road in Michigan. Between 2017 and 2019 there were 36 fatal accidents.
Head of Data and Analytics for moneygeek.com Doug Milnes about one third of the accidents that occur on route 23 are drunk driving related. Milnes said between 2017 and 2019 Alpena County had five fatal accidents and three were drunk driving related.
Milnes also said distracted driving is another cause of many accidents. He said one of their findings was about a third of people indicated that they had either been in a crash or had a close call due to either themselves or another person having a technology related distraction.
Milnes adds that when driving and looking at your phone for five seconds is like driving a football field blind.
He said it all boils down to driver behaviors and driver safety.
