CRTC awarded contract for PFAS cleanup measures

ALPENA, Mich. — The Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center was recently awarded a contract to investigate cleanup measures for PFAS.  The information gathered from the investigation is critical and determines the most effective long–term remedies.

Alpena CRTC Base Commander Colonel James Rossi explains their process.  Rossi said PFAS is a family of chemicals previously used in aircraft firefighting foam at the CRTC.  He said the chemicals have been linked to health concerns when ingested in large enough quantities.  Rossi also said these chemicals have  been discovered in other industries.

There is a federal law that defines eight different steps to addressing environmental concerns.  Rossi added this is step four in the investigation process.

While they don’t have a timeline for a solution, Rossi said they plan to work the investigation until they understand the nature and impact of PFAS.
