Cool and calm weekend; Remnants of Gordon bring showers Monday

High temperatures today reached close to 70 degrees combined with winds out of the north around 10 mph. High temperatures will reach similar or slightly cooler values over the weekend.

Dry weather currently across our area extends west through Wisconsin, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Mostly sunny skies are expected Saturday, then clouds will move in from the south Sunday afternoon and evening. The remnants of Tropical Depression Gordon are bringing widespread rain to sections of the southeastern states and southern Midwest. Showers will move northward into lower Michigan late Sunday and Monday.

After that, our attention turns to Tropical Storm Florence currently in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Once a hurricane a few days ago, Florence has temporarily weakened to a tropical storm in the face of wind shear, which is changing wind conditions with height. Wind shear is expected to decrease over the weekend as the storm moves west, so Florence will strengthen again into a hurricane. By Wednesday or Thursday of the upcoming week, Florence is forecast to approach the East Coast as a category 4 hurricane. Details regarding strong winds and heavy rain along the East Coast will become clearer after the weekend.

In Northeast Michigan, low temperatures tonight will drop to the upper 40s under mostly clear skies. Temperatures Saturday morning will start close to 50 degrees, so grabbing the jacket or a sweater would be a good idea for any length of time spent outdoors.

Afternoon temperatures will reach only into the middle and upper 60s on Saturday and Sunday. For the rest of Northeast Michigan’s weather forecast, watch the latest weather video by clicking the weather tab at the top of the page.
