Christmas came early for the four-legged residents of the Alpena County Sheriffs Office Animal Control Shelter. Thanks to community donations, the dogs each got to pick their very own toys. DeeAnn Karos, an animal care technician at the shelter recaps the event, “We wanted the dogs to each get thee experience to pick their own toys. So we got the community involved and asked them if they could donate toys that the dogs could pick. So, we got a wide variety of toys so each dog could pick a hard toy, soft toy, and we weren’t just giving them toys that they wouldn’t play with.” Animals need time to decompress while at the shelter, and comforting items such as toys can help them gain confidence and comfort in their new environment.

With the toys lined up for choosing, the shelter staff and volunteers watched as the dogs made their selections; some taking their time to sniff each one, while others raced to their favorites. It was such a joyous event; many pups even took victory laps to show off their prized presents. Many of the dogs that come to the shelter have never had a toy before their stay and light up with excitement as they learn to play. Michelle Reid, animal control officer, reflects on the generosity of the shelter’s supporters, “I cannot say enough of how appreciate we are of our community. Our community and our supporters are the best. We couldn’t do what we do for these animals without their support. You made these dogs have a very happy Christmas.”

All of the dogs that participated in this event are either adoptable or in foster care through the Alpena County Sherriff’s Office Animal Control Shelter. If interested in adopting, donating, or volunteering, be sure to check them out on Facebook or by visiting the shelter at the Alpena County Fairgrounds.
