Brighter weekend with chilly temperatures

A cold front moved through earlier today, reinforcing chilly temperatures over Michigan. Showers began around midday and continued through the afternoon. At times, rain mixed with snow in parts of northern Michigan. These showers are on the way out. High pressure near the Minnesota-North Dakota border will get closer to our area and bring some sunshine over the weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for nearly all of northern Michigan. Low temperatures will drop to about 30 degrees overnight. Precautions should be taken to protect vegetation sensitive to freezing temperatures. The Freeze Warning will be in effect from midnight to 8 a.m. Saturday.

Saturday: Partly cloudy, cool. Early-morning lows will be near 30 degrees. Afternoon highs will get up to about 53 degrees. Evening temperatures will be in the 40s.

Sunday: Partly cloudy for Mother’s Day. Predawn lows will drop to around 29 degrees, so another hard freeze is expected early Sunday. Afternoon highs will reach close to 51 degrees. Evening temperatures will cool to the 40s.

Monday: Partly cloudy, remains cool. Early-morning temperatures will begin near 33 degrees. Afternoon highs will be around 51 degrees. Evening temperatures will be mainly in the 40s.

In other science news, NASA will launch a rocket Saturday evening form their facility in Wallops Island, Virginia. This equipment will study properties about the momentum and energy of the magnetic field in space. Weather is looking good for liftoff in Virginia. The launch will be visible over most of the eastern U.S., locally we will be able to see it for about 90 seconds. Liftoff is currently scheduled for 8:02 p.m. Saturday evening. Here, we’ll have mostly clear skies with temperatures in the upper 40s.
