APS Superintendent Addresses School Bus Issues

With many bus cancellations this school year, parents are seeking answers behind these unexpected schedule changes. While the district is hiring for multiple positions in their transportation department, it is not just a staff shortage causing the interruptions.

“Actually, this most recent round of our having to cancel busses was not necessarily due to a staffing shortage, but just illnesses and absences making their way through the department,” said David Rabbideau, Alpena Public Schools superintendent. “But, we are always looking for additional bus drivers. We have a system of subbing out the routes, but we found ourselves without a lot of our subs being available.”

Unfortunately, route cancellations may continue.“There may be other cancellations, and we know what a frustration and challenge that is for families, so we try to avoid that at all costs, but the basic routes will remain the same,” said Rabbideau.

The department is still hiring for bus drivers, relief drivers, bus attendants, and most recently, a transportation supervisor. “It’s a great position, you know, we have a lot of bus drivers that have been with us for a very long time, they love their job, they love being around the kids and it’s a great opportunity for them, so we encourage anyone to apply for a job,” said Rabbideau. Bus driver positions provide paid training, full benefits, and the opportunity to make an impact on the community. Be sure to keep up with Alpena Public Schools for further updates.
