Alpena’s RJ Centala Hosts Free Youth Disc Golf Clinic

ALPENA, MI – The Alpena Disc Golf Club is running a free disc golf clinic for anyone 18 years of age or under on July 15 at 2 p.m. Attendees will have the chance to learn from some of Michigan’s best professional disc golfers, including Alpena native RJ Centala.

Centala began his disc golf career in 2016, and has travelled throughout Michigan and the country competing in tournaments. Growing up in Alpena, Centala’s was looking for a way to give back to his hometown. Recently, he was given the resources to be able to put on a free clinic for children in the area. “My goal was to get something in Alpena,” he said. “I wanted to do something nice for the community that raised me.”

The disc golf clinic will take place at Bayview Park and will run for one hour. Children will be given a free disc golf disc for attending. Additionally, attendees will also receive top-tier lessons from Centala and Austin Hawks. The coaching will include learning the basics, including throwing mechanics and also putting.

The clinic currently has 20 registered players, and there’s also plenty of space left for anyone interested in learning the game. Online registration for the event ends on July 14 at 8 p.m.

Following the free youth clinic, Centala is also hosting a two-round disc golf tournament. The tournament is set for July 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Lumberjack Meadows.

The tournament includes multiple pro and amateur divisions to participate in. Professional division players have the chance to win cash prizes and trophies, while amateurs can win prizes such as trophies and merchandise. Online registration for the event closes on July 15 at 6 p.m.
