Alpena Wildcats Win 34-33 in Thriller of a Home-Opener

ALPENA, MI – The Alpena Wildcats opened their 2023-24 high school football season hosting Flint Powers in a nail-biter of a game on Thursday night.

The Wildcats defense came alive early in the game. In the first few minutes of the first quarter, Alpena’s Cole Herman held off the Chargers by sacking quarterback Javontae Ross. Flint Powers continued downfield but Alpena’s defensive squad put a stop to the Chargers’ drive.

Alpena’s Jacob Zann put up numbers all night. The quarterback tallied three touchdowns in the first quarter of the game. Zann found Easton Srebnik to give Alpena the 7-0 lead.  Minutes later, Alpena forced a fumble and recovered the ball on the Chargers’ drive. Zann threw to Joe Sheridan extending the Wildcats lead to 14-0. Flint Powers was forced to kick a field goal to put some points on the board in the first half. The Wildcats led 27-3 at halftime.

The Chargers offense got rolling in the second half. Flint Powers trailed 27-24 heading into the fourth quarter. Eli Chism had a crucial momentum-building touchdown to extend the Wildcats lead to 34-24. The Chargers scored with just 56 seconds left in the game. Flint Powers attempted the extra two but Alpena held them off.

The Wildcats kick off their season with a well-fought 34-33 victory over Flint Powers. Alpena hits the road to meet Marquette on August 31 at 7 p.m.
