Alpena Wildcats Showcase Career and Technical Education to Sanborn Students

On Monday, Alpena High School Career and Technical Education (CTE) Students led Sanborn Elementary students through a variety of professions to generate excitement for their futures. Joyce McCoy, director of CTE at Alpena High School said, “It’s great for our high school students because they’re the teachers here today. Every student has a project in their class that they’re working on and how fun is it that to be teaching someone else? That is a great way to learn!”

The Sanborn students participated in hands on activities ranging from making birdhouses, to virtual welding, to preparing business orders. Kori Knudson, Sanborn Elementary principal said, “It allows our students to be exposed to so many programs that give them chance to look maybe outside of colleges, or look at trades, and really think about what they might do in the future.”

The CTE program allows students to get a jump start on their future, giving students the opportunity to earn college credits and certifications that can boost their resumes for college or their future careers. “Alpena is alive and strong in career and tech education,” said McCoy. “If you’re a parent of one of these children, at any time, come and see us, we’d love to have you come and see the possibilities.” Knudson agrees, and said, “This is really powerful, and it’s really eye opening to see how many opportunities there are and how willing our community is to give back to our students, so thank you.” The field trip was a success and students left excited for high school and their futures.
