Alpena Wildcats Gear Up for 2023-24 Football Season

ALPENA, MI – The 2023-24 high school football season is just two weeks away. We took a visit to Alpena High School to get an inside look at how the Wildcats are preparing for their upcoming schedule.

The Alpena Wildcats are seeking redemption after a disappointing 2022-23 season. During the off-season, the team has had time to adjust and make changes ahead of the upcoming season. Head Coach Eric Mitchell has laid out the ground work for what he expects from his players this year. “We didn’t meet the expectations that we set for ourselves,” he said. “I think one of our biggest things is that we’re fully healthy right now.”

This coming season is a special one for many of Mitchell’s players. Around 21 seniors are gearing up for their final ride playing for the Wildcats. Senior quarterback Jake Zann has felt the excitement from his team during practices. “It’s become a little bit more passionate for the players around me,” he said. “We really care about each other and care about how we do as a team.”

While the Wildcats continue to prepare for the fall season, the entire program has one goal in mind. “We know that if we get to six wins,” Mitchell said. “We will for sure make the playoffs and that’s our goal.”

The Alpena Wildcats home opener is set for August 24 at 7 p.m. where they face Flint Powers at Wildcat Stadium.
