Alpena water bill increase and delinquent accounts

ALPENA, Mich. — If you live in Alpena, you can expect to pay more for water this summer.  An outside consultant advised the city to raise rates by approximately 15 percent but the City of Alpena decided on a small increase of about 2.2 percent.

The increase takes place every year and is the smallest customers have seen.  Residents can expect to pay 13 cents for every 1,000 gallons of water they use.

The increase is expected to begin July 1.

Delinquent Water and Sewer Accounts

If you received assistance with water and sewer bills during the pandemic, that 90–day relief period has now ended.

Staff told city council that they will not issue shut–off notices but will start collection procedures.

These delinquent accounts range from a few dollars to over a thousand.  Staff said as long as customers develop a payment plan for unpaid balances, they will work with them to keep their service on.
