Alpena Township to change basic life transport status for fire department

ALPENA, Mich. – The Alpena Township Board of Trustees has decided to change is basic life transport status.

The township would classify fire department staff as Medical First Responders or MFR’s.

This would lower the qualifications for potential candidates in an effort to hire more fire and first responders.

Alpena Township Fire Chief Dave Robbins said while he agrees with the change it would pose some challenges with staffing.

“Making sure the board is aware that from dropping from basic life transport to MFR, there will one or two medications that we currently carry that we no longer would be able to carry as an MFR that we’re able to carry an EMT.”

The Board said the overall goal is to gain a pool of staff before changing back to EMT status.
