ALPENA, MI – We’ve reached playoff basketball for the Lady Wildcats. In this first round matchup, Alpena was looking for some payback against the Gaylord Blue Devils. Back on Friday, Gaylord gave the Lady Wildcats a big fat loss to end their regular season. Now with the slate wiped clean, Alpena had the chance to hand that L right back at the Blue Devils and send them home early with a first round exit.
Alpena looking to make a statement, jumped out ahead early tonight. First up, Reese Wisniewski on the wing. She cuts back then gets swarmed by Blue Devil defenders. She dishes it out then Alpena finds Franciska Treiliha in the paint wide open and she gets the easy layup.
Reese now from nearly half court makes a long pass to Franciska in the corner. She puts up a three–pointer and nails it.
Just like in their last meeting, Alpena took an early lead but something felt different this time. Franciska now driving in, makes the perfect pass behind the defender. Allison Urlaub for a corner two-pointer gets that one to fall thanks to the great assist from Franciska.
Urlaub now gets it from Reese Wisniewski. She moves along the wing then jacks up a triple and sinks it. Allison Urlaub led the team with 12 points.
At one point Alpena had a 19 point lead over Gaylord and wouldn’t let their foot off the gas tonight. Allie to Franciska and then to Avery Dubey in the corner. Avery fires for three and hits another one for the Lady Wildcats.
Second half now, despite the Blue Devils shooting better in this half, Alpena always stayed one step ahead. One big reason why they stayed ahead was their great work on the offensive boards. Alpena gets multiple offensive rebounds here before Aalayna Trelfa finally makes the putback two.
Now Trelfa gets the ball from Urlaub. She then finds Jenna Leeck in the paint to make the layup and the revenge win is complete.
Gaylord may have got the win to end Alpena’s regular season, but the Lady Wildcats send the Blue Devils home early and stay alive in the playoffs. Final score is 49–37. Alpena now takes on Marquette in the quarter–finals on Wednesday. The Alpena Boys Basketball squad also will be in action tomorrow night against Rogers City as they get closer to their first round playoff game next Monday.
